General Tips

Here are some general tips for driving that may be useful!

  • Make sure that you always wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers are as well! Even if the passengers are over 16 it is still good practice to ask them.
  • Don’t drive like you own the road! Drive like you own the car!
  • Make sure your windshield is clean to avoid being blinded by sunlight reflecting off it
  • Make sure you have petrol! You don’t want to run out and have to push the car home!
  • Don’t drive if you have been drinking or get in a car with an intoxicated person. Your parents and friends would much rather give you a ride home than let you drink drive!
  • Be aware that some over the counter drugs, like medications, can make you drowsy so check the label for any warnings
  • Don’t blast the radio! You could miss hearing a warning siren or horn. And let’s be honest, even though you like your music, it doesn’t mean that everyone does!
  • Ensure that you don’t distract yourself with your phone, or to apply make-up, to do your hair, or eat etc. Pull over to the side of the road and park the car, and then go ahead! Did you know that people using their phone while driving is four time more likely to have an accident!
  • Avoid fiddling with the radio and air conditioning as they are another distraction to try and avoid
  • Use quality tyres that are inflated to the right pressure
  • Maintain your car. A WOF doesn’t mean that it stays at a safe standard of use until the next year!
  • If you are going out to a party make sure you have a sober driver to get you home before you go out!
  • Always be on the lookout for motorcycles, bikes and pedestrians
  • If driving to a new place get complete directions before you leave so you know where to turn and when
