Youth Council member 2017 - Felix Jackson.

Felix Jackson - Year 11

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Art and photography.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
I am looking forward to being the necessary link between Marlborough Youth and the Council.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
As a member of the Marlborough Boys' Leos Club, I've worked on a bunch of community projects with different people. This knowledge of working with the Community can be a positive contribution to the Youth Council.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
To work in an area/job which has both art and English. To be able to express my creative ideas through my work.

George Glover - Year 10

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Swimming
Waterpolo
Musical theatre

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
To connect the opinions of youth and successfully voice them to the Council. To develop my leadership skills.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
Leadership and being able to convey the opinion of youth in Marlborough to the Council.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
Join the Navy and become a warfare office or marine biologist. 2024 Olympics.

 

Youth Council Member 2017 - Jack Dalton.

Jack Dalton

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I am a co-founder of an education company called ‘Scholar’! This takes up a lot of time in my life, we are still in the start up case so it is full steam ahead. In my spare time I really enjoy going for a mountain bike ride or a walk. The outdoors is a great thing! I also race motorbikes competitively so I get to travel New Zealand quite a bit. 

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
I really enjoy running and organising Marlborough Youth Council events so the goal this year is to hold an event which gets a great turnout with a good variety of youth attending. Also learning about how the Marlborough District Council runs, I plan to get more involved with the elder council. 

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
This is my fourth year on the Marlborough Youth Council so I have a lot of knowledge and experience about how things work. I am the Head of Student Council at Marlborough Boys’ College and have completed many leadership camps such as Outward Bound. I see myself as a strong leader with knowledge to share so I hope I get the opportunity to share that knowledge with other councillors.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I would love to go to university but at this stage I look to be running my company Scholar which is fantastic because I am really passionate about it and have heaps of motivation to drive it in the right direction. 

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Jack Flyn.

Jack Flynn - Year 9

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I enjoy karate, survival/preparedness and the great outdoors.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
I am looking forward to keeping the voices of Marlborough youth heard and keeping the flow of communication strong between youth and the Marlborough District Council.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I have leadership qualities
I am driven and compassionate
I am happy and capable to speak in public

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
When I leave school I want to be a trauma doctor.

 

Youth Council Member 2017 - James Hammond.

James Hammond - Year 12

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I enjoy playing and coaching water polo.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Getting involved around the region.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
Leadership skills and a differing opinion.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
Not really sure - still time to decide!

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Liam Gee.

Liam Gee - Year 13

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
My hobbies are rallying and any form of Motorsport. I also enjoy activities outdoors.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Gaining new leadership skills and becoming a voice for young people in Marlborough.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I think the skills I'll bring to the Youth Council will be helpful for organising events.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I am not 100% sure what I'll be doing when I leave school, but I'd like it to involve cars and motorsport, whether it is competing or working on them.

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Lotu Solomona.

Lotu Solomona - Year 11

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Sports.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Not sure but learn new leadership skills and make new friends.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
Leadership skills, good manners and supportive.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I want to become a PE teacher.

 

Youth Council Member 2017 - William Day.

William Day - Year 12

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Refereeing rugby, playing cricket and volleyball.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Organising fun events for the youth of Marlborough and hopefully organising successful projects that everyone can enjoy.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I have had past experiences with organising large scale events such as the Junior socials, which involves approaching businesses and getting things organised. I also have experience budgeting for events.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I am not entirely sure at this point, but I have been interested in going into teaching or commerce.

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Sport: basketball, volleyball, netball, waterpolo, touch, badminton and music.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Helping to get the voice of youth heard
Organising fun events for youth

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
Leadership & hopefully some good ideas!

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
Rehabilitation officer for youth and Children's Councillor.

Caitlyn-Woodley-MGC.

Caitlyn Woodley - Year 13

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I play netball and also enjoy spending time with my friends and family.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Expressing the voice of the youth in the community.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
This is my second year on Youth Council to experience new skills. I am also very passionate and driven.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I want to study law and do a double art history degree and do a BCom.

Georgia Reed - Year 9

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Sport: Netball, touch, rugby, waterpolo, swimming, rugby, hunting, guitar, farming/vineyard.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Promoting youth in our community and speaking up
Get youth's voices heard
Speaking up about issues for youth in our community
Running events for youth
Be there for youth if they need it

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
Leadership
Communication
Empathy towards others

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
At this stage I am not sure what I want to do but, whatever I end up doing, I would hope to have a positive influence on the community and lead by example.

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Heather Peter.

Heather Peter - Year 10

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I enjoy running, reading, playing netball and softball. I'm also starting to play squash, which is quite fun.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
I am looking forward to getting to know some great people, getting some leadership skills and helping to set up some great events for youth.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I think that I will bring a logical mind. I also think that I will bring some experience of setting up dances etc. as at Bohally I help out a lot with the discos.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
When I leave school I want to be an aerospace engineer (rocket scientist). I want to move to the USA and work for NASA. One of my main goals is to build a working light sail (it's a wind sail but with light).

Lindsay McGinlay - Year 11

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I enjoy sport, any outdoor activities.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
I am looking forward to being the voice of the youth.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I think that I have fresh, youthful ideas and will follow through helping carry out our activities/events.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I plan on a gap year being a councillor at an American summer camp, then becoming an orthodontist.

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Meg Flanagan.

Meg Flanagan - Year 9

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Sport, reading, writing, drawing and running.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Helping others and being a voice for the youth of Marlborough.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I am easy to get along with and am really good at communication. I can listen and I have experience with being a leader.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I would like to be doing something that involved helping others, creative devices to help others and make their lives easier. I want to be remembered for something that changed the world we live in.

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Yasmin Burdis.

Yasmin Burdis - Year 11

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I enjoy spending my time writing - I have two books in the works currently. I also like to read when I have the time to spare. I love to ride horses and also love to bike. I often go shooting with my father and like to think that I'm not half-bad!

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
I think this is the perfect opportunity to develop greater youth connection and a greater sense of community between the young people of Marlborough. I will do my best to promote the Youth Council and it's efforts in all I do.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I have recently been given the amazing privilege of becoming the Marlborough Girls' College Board of Trustees prefect for 2017. I'd like to think that I can use the skills and knowledge I've acquired and developed from holding this position thus far, in ways that will be beneficial to or insightful for the Youth council. Such skills include, but are not limited to: the ability to be an unbiased voice for my peers that may not have a loud enough voice on their own, or the ability to be consistently available to talk to and hear the opinion of others in Marlborough when they would like to share ideas.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I plan to get a Bachelor of medicine and surgery to become a forensic psychiatrist. I'll hopefully move to England once completing my degree, and work as a forensic psychologist in prisons there until I gain my Citizenship. Once I have done so, I would like enlist in the British Armed Forces (preferably Royal Marines or Royal Army) and work as a psychiatrist in the military.

Celene Prangley - Year 12

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I like to sing and act. I play waterpolo an enjoy painting and reading in my own time. I like tramping and the outdoors also, and help out on the farm when I can. I participate in as many things as I can and help out. I love having a good time with my family and friends.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Getting youth out there in the community enjoying themselves.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
A positive attitude and bright new ideas!

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
So many option to choose in my future career, so haven't decided yet but emergency services, farming and animal care and working on an avocado orchard!

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Kristina Gibbs.

Kristina Gibbs - Year 11

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
I'm a salsa/hip hop dancer with Studio HQ and am an international champion within this sport. I also enjoy playing the piano and being a part of the school kapa haka

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
I am looking forward to gaining more leadership skills and voicing opinions and ideas from my school (QCC).

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I feel that I have a strong voice and am willing to really try and get the youth of Picton more involved. Also being a part of multiple youth groups in Marlborough from dance to kapa haka I keep up to date with what's happening within youth in Marlborough, both positive and negative.

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I would like to consider the option of going to a performing arts school to further my skills in the sport of dancing.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?

Student teaching on manaaki tapoi or youth working.

 

Youth Council member 2017 - Sibohan Grant.

Sibohan Grant - Year 13

What hobbies/interests do you have out of school?
Netball, also coaching netball.

What are you looking forward to doing on the Youth Council?
Being able to do some cool activities throughout the year and get to be the voice of youth in Marlborough.

What skills/experience do you think that you'll be bringing to Youth Council?
I am on the Student Council at my college, I also have leadership skills and many others from doing Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
I want to join the Police.
