The New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) provides HIV tests, free counselling, HIV prevention and HIV research in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

NMDHB (Wairau Hospital)

Those utilising addiction services at NMDHB (the Wairau Hospital) can access HIV tests as part of their treatment.

Pregnant women are offered a free HIV test, done at the same time as other antenatal blood tests.

The most common ways that people become infected with HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) are:

  • having sexual intercourse with an infected partner
  • injecting drugs using a needle or syringe or other injecting equipment that has been used by someone who is infected
  • as a baby of an infected mother, during pregnancy, labour or delivery, or through breastfeeding
